Under the supervision of the Vegetation Manager this position will be responsible and accountable for the completion of in-field vegetation annual plan and all line clearance activities in their area.


Job Qualifications:

Candidate(s) will be required to meet the following requirements:

  • Associates (or Higher) of Science in Forestry or other related field.
  • 5+ years of utility vegetation management experience.
  • General knowledge of utility vegetation management equipment (bucket/manual crew equipment, mowers, off-road tree removal equipment, herbicide application methods & equipment).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate vegetation clearing in conjunction with line rebuilds and new construction, including but not limited to:
    • Crew & work scheduling
    • Working knowledge of easement language, research, & parcel identification (map & field)
    • Notifying public entities on transmission line clearance work
    • Securing signed permission for work needed
  • Experience with aerial and ground inspections.
  • Familiar with FAC-003-1 and -2 NERC vegetation standards.

Parks and Forestry Department

This position maintains City trees and performs tasks in support of urban forestry programs and operations. Works regular weekly schedule except as needed for unusual events.

Essential Duties

  • Performs tree maintenance including pruning; and tree, stump and woody debris removal and disposal.
  • Plants, waters, fertilizes, mulches and treats trees.
  • Responds to storm damage situations; clears woody debris from streets, pathways and City property.
  • Identifies tree pests and cultural problems, making recommendations for and applying treatment.
  • Assists with the implementation of pest management programs.
  • Assists with inventory of City trees on rights-of-way and City property.
  • Enters and retrieves information using various computer programs and applications.
  • Assists with administration and issuance of tree permits and facilitates compliance with tree ordinance requirements relating to regulated activities.

Oak Wilt Grant Facilitator 2016-17

A part-time to three quarter-time, grant-funded facilitator is being sought to facilitate and coordinate activities of the Arboriculture Society of Michigan’s oak wilt grant projects MISGP through October 2017. This position focuses on facilitating the implementation of multi-partner, multi-county oak wilt education projects and demonstrations.

Organization: Arboriculture Society of Michigan (ASM)

Background – ASM’s mission is to improve the profession of arboriculture. Oak wilt disease is a devastating and rapidly spreading problem in MI. ASM has secured a grant through the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program (MISGP) to reduce oak wilt through collaborative education. There are six projects within the grant. The current grant cycle runs from May 2016 through October 2017.


Compensation: $15/hour; Travel expenses when necessary
